The Slats

The Slats on Princess was a project done for Uptown Waterloo BIA

Amy Esplen and her team were responsible for creating, designing and fabricating
the public installation that was placed on top of the existing road mural created by
Renée Hanson.

Welcome to The Slats on Princess

The modular seating was inspired by the idea of public place-making and turning a thorough way into something more. How could we rejuvenate the space into something that gives back to the community and sparks joy?

The colours

The colours were inspired by the road mural Renée Hanson created last summer, in hopes of reinvigorating her artwork for a second time.

Boko helped us create the mirrored boxes to help evoke a sense of reflection after a long winter, but they also bring the flat road mural Renée created into the 3D space, depending on where you are sitting.

The Patterns

The patterns on the boxes were meant to be a node to the idea of sharing space and the different ways you can do that. The polka dots reflect a few visitors scattered and sitting at a distance in silence. The abstract lines hope to reflect the visitor that shares a conversation with a member of the community.

The space was built for the community to use, and the visitors were encouraged to be creative in the space and sit somewhere new every time.

The Slats was a versatile public space built for the community, it was used as everything from a lunch spot to a drag queen’s stage and that is what made it so special!
